Psalm 34: Not Safe, But Secure | Matthew Maher

Psalm 34 was written by David after one of the most humiliating moments of his life—when he fled for his life and pretended madness before King Achish in Gath. What followed was not bitterness or silence, but praise. This psalm shows us how public worship can be born from private crisis, and how deliverance does not always mean escape, but redemption. In this message, we walk through Psalm 34 as both wisdom and testimony, tracing David’s journey from fear to praise, from desperation to invitation, and from affliction to assurance. We discover that praise is not driven by feelings, but by focus; not shaped by circumstances, but by perspective. God delivers us not only from enemies, but from fear itself—and He draws especially near to the brokenhearted. Psalm 34 also points us forward to Christ. David writes that God guards all the bones of the righteous, foreshadowing Jesus’ crucifixion, where not one of His bones was broken. Unbroken bones reveal unbroken promises. Righteousness does not exempt us from suffering, but it guarantees redemption through it. This psalm ends where the Gospel begins: rescue by redemption. Trusting the Lord does not remove tribulation, but it does remove condemnation.
