Week 4 Focus: Identifying Presuppositions

A key part of biblical apologetics is learning how to identify what someone truly believes beneath the surface. Every argument is built on underlying assumptions—these are called presuppositions.

If we fail to recognize them, we will often end up arguing on the wrong level.

The Ad Hominem Argument

One common type of argument addressed this week is the ad hominem argument, which means “to the man.”

This is when someone attacks a person’s character instead of addressing the truth of their argument.

Rather than engaging with ideas, the focus shifts to discrediting the individual.

Jesus pointed out this kind of inconsistency when He said:

“They preach, but do not practice.” (Matthew 23:2–3)

Exposing the Foundation

In apologetics, the goal is not simply to respond to surface-level objections, but to expose the unstable foundation beneath them.

When someone builds their worldview apart from Christ, it ultimately cannot hold together.

As believers, we are called to:

  • Listen carefully to what is being said
  • Identify what the person claims to believe
  • Show where their beliefs are inconsistent with reality

This requires patience, clarity, and discernment.

The Christian View of Truth

Christianity stands on the foundation of objective truth.

  • Truth is not subjective or changing
  • Moral values are rooted in God’s character
  • Right and wrong are defined by God’s Word

Because of this, we are not inventing truth—we are pointing people back to what is already real and unchanging.

Why This Matters

Every person lives according to what they believe to be true, even if they cannot consistently live it out.

Apologetics helps reveal that inconsistency.

By identifying presuppositions and asking the right questions, we help others see that their worldview cannot ultimately support the way they think, reason, or live.

Conclusion

Week 4 teaches us to go deeper.

We don’t just respond to arguments—we uncover what’s underneath them.

We listen carefully.
We think critically.
We expose false foundations.

And through it all, we point people back to the only foundation that stands—Jesus Christ.
