The Sheep, The Coats, and the Kitchen
John Wilson
Therefore, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us also lay aside every weight, and sin which clings so closely, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us — Hebrews 12:1
And Samuel came to Saul, and Saul said to him, "Blessed be you to the LORD. I have performed the commandment of the LORD." And Samuel said, "What then is this bleating of the sheep in my ears and the lowing of the oxen that I hear?" Saul said, "They have brought them from the Amalekites, for the people spared the best of the sheep and of the oxen to sacrifice to the LORD your God, and the rest we have devoted to destruction." — 1 Samuel 15:13–15
And the LORD sent you on a mission and said, 'Go, devote to destruction the sinners, the Amalekites, and fight against them until they are consumed.' Why then did you not obey the voice of the LORD? Why did you pounce on the spoil and do what was evil in the sight of the LORD?" — 1 Samuel 15:18–19
Saul said to Samuel, "I have sinned, for I have transgressed the commandment of the LORD and your words, because I feared the people and obeyed their voice. — 1 Samuel 15:24
Then he said, "I have sinned; yet honor me now before the elders of my people and before Israel, and return with me, that I may bow before the LORD your God." — 1 Samuel 15:30
The fear of man lays a snare, but whoever trusts in the LORD is safe. — Proverbs 29:25
For am I now seeking the approval of man, or of God? Or am I trying to please man? If I were still trying to please man, I would not be a servant of Christ. — Galatians 1:10
• You don't work for God's approval; you work from it.
But one thing I do: forgetting what lies behind and straining forward to what lies ahead, I press on toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus. — Philippians 3:13–14
Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come. — 2 Corinthians 5:17
• You can't run forward while staring backward.
Now as they went on their way, Jesus entered a village. And a woman named Martha welcomed him into her house. And she had a sister called Mary, who sat at the Lord's feet and listened to his teaching. But Martha was distracted with much serving. And she went up to him and said, "Lord, do you not care that my sister has left me to serve alone? Tell her then to help me." But the Lord answered her, "Martha, Martha, you are anxious and troubled about many things, but one thing is necessary. Mary has chosen the good portion, which will not be taken away from her." — Luke 10:38–42
• You can do the right thing at the wrong time and miss the best thing.
Looking to Jesus, the founder and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is seated at the right hand of the throne of God. — Hebrews 12:2
Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light. — Matthew 11:28–30
Discussion Questions
1. Saul admitted he sinned because he "feared the people and obeyed their voice" rather than obeying God. In what areas of your life do you find yourself making decisions based on what others think rather than what God has called you to?
2. The message draws a contrast between working *for* God's approval and working *from* it — as those already accepted in Christ. How does knowing you already have God's approval through Jesus change the way you approach your everyday obedience and service?
3. Philippians 3:13–14 and 2 Corinthians 5:17 both point to the freedom of leaving the past behind. What is one thing from your past — a failure, a regret, or an old identity — that you struggle to fully release, and how might embracing your identity as a new creation help you move forward?
4. In the story of Mary and Martha, Jesus says Mary chose "the good portion." Where in your own life might you be doing the right things at the wrong time, and missing the deeper, more necessary thing God is inviting you into?
5. Hebrews 12:2 calls us to run our race by "looking to Jesus." What does it practically look like for you to keep your focus on Jesus when the weights of daily life — busyness, comparison, past mistakes — are pulling your attention elsewhere?
