When Heaven Stops To Listen

• The same hands that were nailed to a cross to satisfy God's wrath now hold the scroll to ratify God's wrath.

When He opened the seventh seal, there was silence in heaven for about half an hour. — Revelation 8:1
Be silent in the presence of the Lord God; for the day of the Lord is at hand, for the Lord has prepared a sacrifice; He has invited His guests. — Zephaniah 1:7

• Just because Heaven is silent doesn't mean Heaven is distant.

And I saw the seven angels who stand before God, and to them were given seven trumpets. — Revelation 8:2
"For by Him all things were created that are in heaven and that are on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or principalities or powers. All things were created through Him and for Him." — Colossians 1:16
Then another angel, having a golden censer, came and stood at the altar. He was given much incense, that he should offer it with the prayers of all the saints upon the golden altar which was before the throne. And the smoke of the incense, with the prayers of the saints, ascended before God from the angel's hand. — Revelation 8:3-4

Then the angel took the censer, filled it with fire from the altar, and threw it to the earth. And there were noises, thunderings, lightnings, and an earthquake. — Revelation 8:5

• When the prayers go up, the battle comes down.

Discussion Questions

1. Can you think of a time when silence communicated something more powerful than words?

2. Why do you think Heaven becomes silent after chapters filled with worship, praise, and activity?

3. Why do the prayers of the saints appear both before the seals are opened (Rev. 5) and again after the seventh seal (Rev. 8)?

4. Why is it important to remember that God often works behind the scenes before we see what He is doing?

5. Have you ever gone through a season when it felt like God was silent? What helped you continue trusting Him?

6. Read Psalm 46:10. How does "Be still and know that I am God" connect with the silence of Heaven in Revelation 8?

7. The sermon's graphic showed:
  * Revelation 5: Prayers of the Saints
  * Revelation 6: "How Long, O Lord?"
  * Revelation 8: Prayers Rise Again
  * Revelation 8: Fire Cast to Earth
  * The Result: God Was Working the Whole Time
Looking back over your own life, can you identify a situation where you only saw the dots at the time, but later realized God was seeing the whole picture?
