When Hell Answers to Heaven
Matthew Maher

Then the fifth angel sounded: And I saw a star fallen from heaven to the earth. To him was given the key to the bottomless pit. — Revelation 9:1

• Hell cannot move until heaven permits.
And he opened the bottomless pit, and smoke arose out of the pit like the smoke of a great furnace. So the sun and the air were darkened because of the smoke of the pit. — Revelation 9:2
• A world that rejects heaven, gets hell. A world that rejects the light, gets darkness.
Then out of the smoke locusts came upon the earth. And to them was given power, as the scorpions of the earth have power. They were commanded not to harm the grass of the earth, or any green thing, or any tree, but only those men who do not have the seal of God on their foreheads. — Revelation 9:3-4
• Whether "Mother Nature," human nature, or demonic nature, all of nature answers to God.
And they were not given authority to kill them, but to torment them for five months. Their torment was like the torment of a scorpion when it strikes a man. In those days men will seek death and will not find it; they will desire to die, and death will flee from them. — Revelation 9:5-6
• The greatest fear of mankind suddenly becomes its greatest desire of mankind.
The shape of the locusts was like horses prepared for battle. On their heads were crowns of something like gold, and their faces were like the faces of men. They had hair like women's hair, and their teeth were like lions' teeth. And they had breastplates like breastplates of iron, and the sound of their wings was like the sound of chariots with many horses running into battle. They had tails like scorpions, and there were stings in their tails. Their power was to hurt men five months. — Revelation 9:7-10
And they had as king over them the angel of the bottomless pit, whose name in Hebrew is Abaddon, but in Greek he has the name Apollyon. — Revelation 9:11
One woe is past. Behold, still two more woes are coming after these things. — Revelation 9:12
Discussion Questions
1. The fallen star is given a key, and the demonic creatures are permitted to act. What does Revelation 9 teach us about God's sovereignty, even over hell itself? (Revelation 9:1–2; Job 1:12; Luke 22:31)
2. Why do you think God allows torment but not death? What does this limitation reveal about His justice, mercy, and desire for repentance? (Revelation 9:5–6; Ezekiel 33:11; 2 Peter 3:9)
3. The locusts are commanded not to harm those who bear God's seal. What assurance does this give believers about God's protection, even in seasons of judgment? (Revelation 9:4; Ephesians 1:13–14; John 10:27–29)
4. If every kingdom reflects its king, what evidence in your life shows that you belong to Christ's kingdom rather than the kingdom of darkness? (Revelation 9:11–12; Colossians 1:13; Matthew 6:24)
5. Verse 12 reminds us that two more woes are still coming. How does knowing the end of the story help you face the darkness and chaos of the present? (Revelation 9:12; Philippians 2:9–11; Revelation 19:11–16)
6. After studying Revelation 9, what practical step can you take this week to more fully live under the authority of King Jesus?
