Sermon on the Mount

39:14

This sermon introduces the Sermon on the Mount by tracing the biblical calling of humanity to image God through steadfast love and faithfulness. God reveals His own character to Moses as abounding in steadfast love and faithfulness, then creates mankind in His image to reflect that character and represent His rule in covenant relationship. Yet Adam, Noah, Abraham, Israel, David, and David’s sons all fall short, creating the need for one faithful Son who can fulfill what every covenant son failed to become. Matthew presents Jesus as that faithful Son-King: the Son of David, Son of Abraham, beloved Son, and obedient Son who perfectly represents the Father. Therefore, in the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus teaches His people the kingdom ethic: heart-level obedience that displays the Father’s character so that His name is hallowed, His kingdom comes, and His will is done on earth as it is in heaven. 1. In Exodus 34:6–7, God reveals His core character as "abounding in steadfast love and faithfulness." When you think about how you experience God personally, does this description match what you feel to be true? Why or why not?

2. The sermon describes humanity as created in God's image and likeness — meaning we were designed to reflect His steadfast love and faithfulness to the world around us. In what areas of your life does that calling feel natural, and where does it feel most difficult?

3. Every covenant figure in Scripture — Adam, Noah, Abraham, Israel, David — falls short of the faithfulness they were called to. What does it stir in you to see that pattern repeated throughout the Bible, and how does it point you toward your need for Jesus?

4. Jesus is presented as the faithful Son-King who perfectly embodies the covenant life we were created for. How does knowing that Jesus succeeded where every other covenant son failed change the way you approach your own failures and shortcomings?

5. The sermon closes with a direct question: do we want our lives to display anxiety, anger, and self-protection — or the steadfast love and faithfulness of our Father? What is one specific, practical way you could more clearly bear the "family resemblance" of God this week?
