Revelation Begins: Christ Over Every Chapter of History | Revelation 1:1-8 | Matthew Maher

- Anchored Before the Action (Revelation 1:3) Even though Revelation is filled with visions of beasts, bowls, and battles, John begins by anchoring us in blessing, grace, and peace. Why do you think God chose to open this way? How does this echo John 20:31, where his Gospel says it was written so we may believe?
- The Focus of Revelation (Revelation 1:1–2) Revelation is about Jesus—His cross, His crown, and His coming. How does Colossians 1:15–20 reinforce that Jesus is the center of all things, not just this book?
- Hearing and Keeping (Revelation 1:3) Why is prophecy meant to be obeyed, not just studied? Compare James 1:22 (“be doers of the word”)—how does this challenge us to live Revelation out rather than just talk about it?
- Prophet, Priest, King (Revelation 1:5) Jesus is called the faithful witness (prophet), the firstborn from the dead (priest), and the ruler of kings (king). How do these titles connect with Hebrews 1:1–3? Which role do you most need to rest in today?
- Kingdom of Priests (Revelation 1:6) God calls His people a kingdom of priests. Compare this with Exodus 19:6 and 1 Peter 2:9. What does it practically mean to bring people to God and God to people in your daily life?
- Behold, He Is Coming (Revelation 1:7) John ties Christ’s return to Daniel 7:13 and Matthew 24:30. How do these verses expand your view of His return? Why do you think “every eye will see Him” brings both hope and mourning?
- The Alpha and Omega (Revelation 1:8) Jesus declares Himself the Alpha and Omega, echoed in Isaiah 44:6. How does knowing He holds both the beginning and the end help you trust Him with the middle—your present circumstances?

Sermon Notes
Revelation is about Jesus — His cross, His crown, and His coming.
Revelation 1:1-2
The Revelation of Jesus Christ, which God gave Him to show His servants—things which must shortly take place. And He sent and signified it by His angel to His servant John, who bore witness to the word of God, and to the testimony of Jesus Christ, to all things that he saw.
Revelation 1:3
Blessed is he who reads and those who hear the words of this prophecy, and keep those things which are written in it; for the time is near.
Revelation isn’t for speculation—it’s for application.
Revelation 1:4-5a
John, to the seven churches which are in Asia: Grace to you and peace from Him who is and who was and who is to come, and from the seven Spirits who are before His throne, and from Jesus Christ, the faithful witness, the firstborn from the dead, and the ruler over the kings of the earth.
The throne above rules over every throne below.
Revelation 1:5b-6
To Him who loved us and washed us from our sins in His own blood, and has made us kings and priests to His God and Father, to Him be glory and dominion forever and ever. Amen.
As a kingdom of priests, we bring man to God — and we bring God to man.
Revelation 1:7
Behold, He is coming with clouds, and every eye will see Him, even they who pierced Him. And all the tribes of the earth will mourn because of Him. Even so, Amen.
When Jesus comes “on the clouds,” it’s not just weather—it’s wonder.
Zechariah 12:10
And I will pour on the house of David and on the inhabitants of Jerusalem the Spirit of grace and supplication; then they will look on Me whom they pierced. Yes, they will mourn for Him as one mourns for his only son, and grieve for Him as one grieves for a firstborn.
Every eye will see Him — but not every heart will have received Him.
Revelation 1:8
“I am the Alpha and the Omega, the Beginning and the End,” says the Lord, “who is and who was and who is to come, the Almighty.”
He’s not just at the start of history or the end of history — He is history → It’s HIS STORY
Revelation 12 reminded us of the war behind the seen — heaven’s view on the conflict of history. Revelation 1 reminds us of the Sovereign One behind the scene — Jesus Christ, the center of the story.
