Before Jesus unfolds the future, He inspects the present. Before He sets the world in order, He sets His house in order. In this first letter to the churches, Jesus addresses the Ephesian church — a congregation known for truth, discernment, and doctrinal precision. But despite their strong theology, they had left something essential: their first love. This message explores what it means to be doctrinally right but devotionally wrong — and how Jesus calls His church to remember, repent, and return. It's not just about getting the truth right — it’s about loving the Truth Himself. Thank you for watching a Landmark video. 1. Why does Jesus begin Revelation by addressing the churches before revealing future events? What does this teach us about God’s priorities for His people today? (1 Peter 4:17, Revelation 1:20–2:1)
  2. What does it mean to “leave your first love” (Revelation 2:4)? How is that different from losing it? Have there been seasons where your love for Christ cooled, even while your theology remained strong? (Jeremiah 2:2, Matthew 22:37-38)
  3. Jesus commends the Ephesian church for their discernment but confronts their lack of devotion. Why is it dangerous to have doctrinal soundness without deep love for Christ? (1 Corinthians 13:1–3)
  4. What does Jesus mean when He warns, “I will remove your lampstand from its place” (Revelation 2:5)? What might that look like in a modern context—when a church still exists outwardly but has lost its light? (Matthew 5:14–16)
  5. What does Jesus’ promise to the overcomer teach us about perseverance and reward? How do you personally pursue “overcoming faith” in your daily walk? (1 John 5:4–5, Revelation 2:7)

Sermon Notes

Before Jesus sets the world in order, He sets His house in order.

Revelation 2:1

To the angel of the church of Ephesus write, “These things says He who holds the seven stars in His right hand, who walks in the midst of the seven golden lampstands…”

The Lord who holds His Church in His right hand also holds His Church to His right standard.

Revelation 2:2-3

I know your works, your labor, your patience, and that you cannot bear those who are evil. And you have tested those who say they are apostles and are not, and have found them liars; and you have persevered and have patience, and have labored for My name’s sake and have not become weary.

The Church that confronts error will continue in truth.

Revelation 2:4

Nevertheless I have this against you, that you have left your first love.

It’s truth and love, lest we swing to the extremes: loveless truth or truthless love.

It’s not enough to be clear about Christ; we must also be close to Christ.

Revelation 2:5-6

Remember therefore from where you have fallen; repent and do the first works, or else I will come to you quickly and remove your lampstand from its place—unless you repent. But this you have, that you hate the deeds of the Nicolaitans, which I also hate.

The Church that hates what Christ hates must also love how Christ loves.

Revelation 2:7

He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches. To him who overcomes I will give to eat from the tree of life, which is in the midst of the Paradise of God.

Ephesus shows us that it’s possible to be doctrinally right but devotionally wrong.
