In Revelation 4, heaven opens—and the first thing John sees is not chaos, not judgment, not angels in motion… but a throne. Before the tribulation unfolds on earth, Scripture reveals the settled authority of heaven. God is not reacting—He is reigning. The throne is established, the King is seated, and everything that follows in Revelation 6–19 flows from this throne-room reality. In this message, we walk verse-by-verse through Revelation 4:1–6, seeing the prophetic hinge of “after these things,” the heavenly administration of what comes next, the glory of the One on the throne, the crowned elders surrounding Him, and the holiness that precedes judgment. The world below may be shaking—but the throne above is settled. Thank you for watching a Landmark video. 1. What is the first thing John sees when heaven opens (Rev. 4:2), and why does that matter? How does this shape the way we interpret everything that follows in Revelation? (See also Psalm 103:19.)
  2. Why do you think God shows John a throne before He shows him judgments? What does this teach us about authority, control, and peace in uncertain times? (See Isaiah 66:1; Psalm 93:2.)
  3. How does Colossians 3:1–7 connect with Revelation 4? What does it look like practically to “set your mind on things above” this week? (Col. 3:1–7; Matt. 6:33.)
  4. The 24 elders are seated on thrones, clothed in white, and wearing crowns (Rev. 4:4). Where do we see these exact three rewards promised by Jesus to His church? Why is it significant that these rewards appear here as realized before judgment begins? Bonus: Why might the number 24 point to completeness and representation (1 Chr. 24), giving a picture of the whole redeemed people of God gathered before the throne?
  5. Why is the throne repeated so many times in this chapter (Rev. 4:2–6)? What is God emphasizing by centering everything around His throne? How does this help us trust Him when the world feels unstable? (See Hebrews 12:28; Psalm 11:4-7)

Sermon Notes

Revelation 4:1

After these things I looked, and behold, a door standing open in heaven. And the first voice which I heard was like a trumpet speaking with me, saying, “Come up here, and I will show you things which must take place after this.”

Setting our mind on heaven is not about satisfying spirituality but clarifying spiritual reality.

Revelation 4:2

Immediately I was in the Spirit; and behold, a throne set in heaven, and One sat on the throne.

Revelation begins when God enables us to see what He sees.

Psalm 103:19

The Lord has established His throne in heaven, and His kingdom rules over all.

There may be more than one throne on earth but there is only One on the throne in heaven.

Revelation 4:3

And He who sat there was like a jasper and a sardius stone in appearance; and there was a rainbow around the throne, in appearance like an emerald.

The rainbow in Scripture inspires humility. The rainbow in culture incites pride.

Revelation 4:4

Around the throne were twenty-four thrones, and on the thrones I saw twenty-four elders sitting, clothed in white robes; and they had crowns of gold on their heads.

Daniel 7:9–10

I watched till thrones were put in place, And the Ancient of Days was seated; His garment was white as snow, And the hair of His head was like pure wool. His throne was a fiery flame, Its wheels a burning fire; A fiery stream issued And came forth from before Him. A thousand thousands ministered to Him; Ten thousand times ten thousand stood before Him. The court was seated, And the books were opened.

Revelation 4:5

And from the throne proceeded lightnings, thunderings, and voices. Seven lamps of fire were burning before the throne, which are the seven Spirits of God.

Revelation 4:6a
Before the throne there was a sea of glass, like crystal.

The throne above us is settled — and the One above all is seated.
