Before you can understand a prayer, you must first answer a simple question: Who is God? Not what values does He inspire. Not what causes does He support. Not what feelings does He evoke. Who is He? In a recent prayer delivered by Texas Representative James Talarico, the language sounded compassionate, inclusive, and spiritual. But beneath the language of love was a radically different view of God, truth, and Jesus Christ. The God of Scripture is not a mystery to be discovered through every religion. He has revealed Himself. Jesus did not claim to be one teacher among many, one path among many, or one name among many. He claimed to be the way, the truth, and the life.
