Something deeply disturbing is happening in our culture. From Luigi Mangione and Karmelo Anthony to Lindsay Clancy and Tyler Robinson, we’re watching a cultural instinct to turn people associated with the taking of human life into celebrities, symbols, and causes. The cases are not legally identical. But the cultural reaction reveals something deeper: when sympathy for the accused becomes greater than our grief for the dead, we don’t merely have a crime problem, we have a conscience problem. Scripture warned that perilous times would come—when people would become “brutal, despisers of good” (2 Timothy 3:1–3), and when people would not only practice unrighteousness but “approve of those who practice them” (Romans 1:32).
